The directing effect is a concept in organic chemistry that describes the influence of substituents on the reactivity of a molecule during a chemical reaction. Substituents can either direct the incoming group to a specific position on the molecule (ortho, meta, or para) or influence the overall reactivity of the molecule. This effect is important in determining the regioselectivity of a reaction and can help predict the outcome of a chemical transformation. Understanding the directing effect is crucial for designing efficient synthetic routes in organic chemistry. **
